Above Ground Pool Water Chemistry 101

A beginner-friendly guide to understanding pool chemistry, what to test for, and how to keep your water balanced all season.

Why Chemistry Matters

Proper water chemistry is the single most important factor in keeping your pool safe, clear, and comfortable. Imbalanced water can irritate skin and eyes, damage your liner, corrode equipment, and allow algae to take over.

The Big Three: pH, Chlorine, and Alkalinity

pH (7.2 – 7.6)
pH measures how acidic or basic your water is. Low pH causes eye irritation and liner damage. High pH makes chlorine ineffective. Test and adjust first.

Free Chlorine (2 – 4 ppm)
Chlorine is your primary sanitizer. It kills bacteria and prevents algae. Keep it in range and never let it drop to zero.

Total Alkalinity (80 – 120 ppm)
Alkalinity acts as a buffer that keeps pH stable. Low alkalinity causes wild pH swings. Adjust alkalinity before adjusting pH.

Testing Your Water

Test at least 2-3 times per week during swim season. Use test strips for quick daily checks and a liquid test kit for accurate weekly readings.

The PoolRx Advantage

One of the best investments we recommend is the PoolRx mineral system. By adding natural minerals to your water, it reduces the amount of chlorine you need by up to 50%, saving money and making maintenance easier.
